How to Speed Up a Windows PC Safely

Improve responsiveness by finding startup, storage, memory, and background-process bottlenecks before changing the system.

Start safely: Save your work, back up important files, and change one thing at a time. Similar symptoms can have different causes.

Measure before changing

Restart the PC and use Task Manager to observe CPU, memory, disk, and startup impact while the slowdown occurs.

Reduce startup load

Disable only nonessential startup apps you recognize. Keep security, accessibility, and required hardware utilities enabled.

Create free storage space

Use Windows Storage settings to remove temporary files and move large personal files. Keep enough free space for updates and virtual memory.

Update selectively

Install supported Windows updates and manufacturer drivers, then test. Avoid changing several drivers or utilities at once.

Consider hardware limits

An older hard drive, insufficient memory, thermal throttling, or a failing drive may limit performance beyond what software cleanup can solve.

Repair limitations

These steps provide general educational guidance and cannot guarantee a repair. Software cannot physically repair failed storage, damaged memory, overheating components, broken connectors, or liquid damage.
