Windows System Repair Guide

Repair startup, update, and protected system-file problems using safer built-in Windows tools first.

Start safely: Save your work, back up important files, and change one thing at a time. Similar symptoms can have different causes.

Back up important files

Before deeper system repair, copy irreplaceable documents and photos to a separate drive or trusted storage location. Confirm that the backup opens.

Install pending updates

Open Settings, review Windows Update, install available quality updates, and restart. Avoid interrupting an update once installation has begun.

Repair protected system files

Run System File Checker with sfc /scannow. If needed, repair the Windows component store with DISM, restart, and run SFC again.

Use Startup Repair when Windows will not start

From Windows Recovery Environment choose Troubleshoot, Advanced options, and Startup Repair. Do not choose Reset this PC until backups and less destructive recovery options have been considered.

Use System Restore for a recent failure

If a restore point exists from before the problem began, System Restore can reverse system and driver changes without intentionally deleting personal documents. Applications installed after the restore point may need reinstalling.

Repair limitations

These steps provide general educational guidance and cannot guarantee a repair. Software cannot physically repair failed storage, damaged memory, overheating components, broken connectors, or liquid damage.
